Synopsis

A hard-working woman with two children and a drunkard for a husband.

In the mornings, Choco works in a gold mine along the San Juna river. In the afternoons she cleans clothes for richer famiiles. And when her daughter turns 7, the only thing Choco wants is to buy her a birthay cake. A humble wish that could change her life.

Chocò is the story of a woman from the rural areas in the pacific coast of Colombia, subjugated by her husband and by the dominant male tradition from this part of the country. She portrays the life of many women who undergo violence and mistreatment at home not only in Colombia but in the entire World.

Synopsis

Laura is still waiting for Prince Charming at the age of 24. So when Sandro appears at a party, exactly like her Prince would in her dreams, she thinks she’s found the right one. But then again, when she meets Maxime, Laura starts to wonder if some Princes could be more charming than others?

Of course Sandro has problems of his own : his father, Pierre, just bumped into Madam Irma at his father’s funeral and this reminded him of the date of his own death which Madame Irma had predicted ages ago. Now Pierre is unable to make any plans, not with his new partner Eleonore, nor with Sandro. And Maxime has his own problems, and so does Eleonore, Marianne, Jacqueline and many others. But don’t worry, in the end, they’ll all live happily ever after.

France / French

Directed by Francisco Vargas • With Don Àngel Tavira, Dagoberto Gama, Fermìn Martìnez • Produced by Camara Carnal Films

Synopsis

Don Plutarco, his son Genaro and his grandson Lucio live a double life: musicians and humble farmers, they also support the campesina peasant guerilla movement’s armed efforts against the oppressive government. When the military seizes the village, the rebels flee to the sierra hills, forced to leave behind their stock of ammunition. While the guerillas organize a counterattack, old Plutarco executes his own plan. He plays up his appearance as a harmless violin player, and makes it back into the military-occupied village to recuperate the ammunition hidden his corn field. His violin playing charms the army captain, who orders Plutarco to come back daily. Plutarco has music, but needs ammunition. The Captain wants to stifle the rebellion, but he loves music. Arms and music play cat-and-mouse and result in painful betrayal.

On this journey through amazing arctic landscapes, Jomar seems to do everything in his power to avoid reaching his destination. He meets other tender and confused souls, who will all contribute to push Jomar further along his reluctant journey towards the brighter side of life.

Synopsis

Souléymane, AKA Solo, a 34 year old, Senegalese taxi driver in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is hired by William, a tough 70-year-old white southerner, to drive him in two weeks time, on October 20th, to Blowing Rock, the peak of a secluded mountain. Solo comes to understand William’s plan, and makes one of his own – to befriend the stubborn 70-year-old and dissuade him from jumping off the rock before the two weeks are up. He brings William with him on taxi rides; they visit drug dealers and bars, play pool, and flirt with barmaids. Solo even introduces William to his 9-yearold stepdaughter, smart and independent Alex, with whom William immediately forms a bond. He also meets Solo’s strong-willed Mexican wife Quiera, who discourages Solo from pursuing his dream of becoming a flight attendant. Ultimately, Solo leaves Quiera and moves into William’s motel room. Though William tries to keep Solo at arm’s length, Solo convinces him to act as his study partner for his flight attendant test. Just days before the 20th, Solo is convinced that he has succeeded in saving William.

William also keeps a secret from his past to himself. When he closes his bank account and gives away the last of his possessions, Solo, crushed, realizes that William has not forgotten his death wish, and confronts him. William violently throws him out of their motel room. No longer William’s driver, Solo has lost everything. That’s when Solo realizes that to truly be a selfless friend to William, he must do the opposite of what he had planned: he must be the one to take his friend to his death. And so, on October 20th, Solo drives William to the mountaintop. With them comes Alex, Solo’s last hope to save William. There on Blowing Rock, high above the brilliant autumn colors, where the wind is powerful enough to blow a man up into the sky, the drama reaches its climax.

François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighborhood. Armed with the best intentions, they brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students.

François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods…”

Explore the very concrete local solutions to the global ecological mess.

What are the common points between the millions of landless workers of the plains of Brazil, a couple of microbiologists in France, the world’s biggest organic plantation in Ukraine and Vandana Shina’s experimental farms in India?

Their struggle: a better soil quality and a wiser access to seeds.

Their goals: agricultural self-sufficiency and a better use of limited resources.

Multi-awarded filmmaker Coline Serreau, who started her career as a militant documentarist, returns to her grassroot techniques: she travels the world in search of those who respect the soil and sheds a new light on the multiple initiatives that will allow everyone to answer the key question: “what can I do to save our planet?”.

A sleepwalker. A body. A family. A small community.

Arlene is like a ghost in her life. She lives in a small town in the midlands – surrounded by field after field, woodlands and laneways to disappear down and never come back…

One morning Arlene wakes in the woods beside the body of a young woman. Someone watches from the trees. The body is soon discovered and suspicion spreads through the community. Increasingly drawn to the girl’s family – her grieving sister and accused boyfriend, Arlene barricades herself in at night, afraid to sleep. Haunted by grief buried and delayed, Arlene’s sleeping and waking realities soon blur. And all this time someone is watching her.

Synposis

The Asuka region is the birthplace of Japan. Here, in ancient times, there were those who fulfilled their lives in the midst of waiting. Modern people, apparently having lost this sense of waiting, seem unable to feel grateful for the present, and cling to the illusion that all things will move constantly forward according to one’s own plan.

In ancient times, there were three small mountains that people believed were inhabited by gods. They were Mt. Unebi, Mt. Miminashi, and Mt. Kagu, and they still stand. In that time, a powerful official used the mountains as a metaphor for a struggle inside his own heart. The mountains were an expression of human karma.

Time has passed into the present. Takumi and Kayoko, inheriting the unfulfilled hopes of their grandparents, live out their lives. Their tale continues a story of the ages, representing the uncountable souls that have accumulated in this land.

François, a forty-something bailiff, is about to execute his daily eviction. But fate takes an unexpected turn: as he enters the apartment, he is mistakenly taken hostage by an amateur drug dealer and his father.

Keen to resolve this situation quickly and quietly, the local deputy calls in the Special Police Force. Television crews immediately rush to the scene to make the scoop. Now under crossfire from a dozen snipers, hungry cameramen, a curious crowd, and François’ exasperated wife, the three trapped men prepare their escape.

Their only option: use the neighborhood’s discontentment and start a riot from the 7th floor…
